Scimitar-Horned Oryx

Our next project beginning January 2017 will be the Scimitar-horned Oryx habitat. We will be constructing fencing and building shelters for a group of the Oryx that will contain 20 to 25 individuals with room for growth.

These beautiful African Antelope are now officially extinct in the wild as listed by the IUCN Red List. For this reason, it is very important that as many facilities as possible actively participate in the preservation of these animals. Fortunately, there are organizations such as the Conservation Centers for Species Survival that are leading the way in conservation efforts. There are now several thousand Scimitar-horned Oryx held in captivity worldwide. Projects are ongoing to reintroduce these animals back into the wild. Our center is proud to do its part to help with these preservation efforts.

Scimitar-horned Oryx once roamed many areas of northern Africa in large family groups consisting of as many as 100 members. Their initial decline started with over hunting, that coupled with climate change resulted in them becoming extinct in the wild.

The Veterinary medicine team here at The Wildlife Conservation Center will be participating and actively be working with others on genetic research and conservative breeding to help insure a genetically sound and healthy group of animals that will one day be able to be returned to sustainable wild habitats.
